After a hailstorm: a roof checklist
Ten minutes on the ground can tell you whether to call a roofer.
- Write down the storm date and the hail size if you saw it.
- Look for dents on metal vents, flashing, mailboxes and outdoor units.
- Check for granules washing out of downspouts.
- Look for shingle pieces in the yard.
- Check ceilings and the attic for new stains over the next few rains.
- Photograph everything from the ground.
Hail marks on shingles are rarely visible from the ground. If you found signs above, call a roofer for a proper look. And be cautious with door-to-door crews after big storms.
